I race wheelchairs. Kind of sounds weird huh? But it’s the truth and it’s something people are not ever looking out for when I am on the road training. Before I got my Lumos helmet and firefly lights, I had a bike light mounted to my helmet. It works ok , but it isn’t enough. I decided I needed 360 degree attention getting visibility when I was last riding my recumbent handcycle kind of like a 10 speed I operate with my arms, not my legs. It is very low to the ground and I lay almost flat on my back when I zip around on this contraption. It is very fast and people are not expecting to see this thing that looks like a supersized skateboard come up behind them or along side in traffic. I was training in Los Angeles near UCLA (awesome hills) and was having great fun, until I was almost ran over by a bus! I didn’t think the driver ever saw me over in the bike lane, so low to the ground. I even have a six foot streamer that flys on the wind, that’s mounted to the back. It still isn’t enough. But the Lumos Ultra helmet is so COOL looking it really attracts attention. I synchronize the helmet headlight/tailight/turn signals to flash with the extra firefly lights I have installed, as well. Now I get noticed! I bought the upgraded turn signal remote, and now the entire light system not on their flashes for me when I’m using the turn signal it has an integrated speed sensor that works as a brake light when I slow down. It was lots of creative fun, setting up my firefly lights and the helmet, and I can’t wait to get it out on the road again. In fact, I’m planning on going first thing in the morning. Honestly the lights are not all that expensive and the helmet was competitively priced against helmets that don’t have cool lights built into them. The entire system augments my GoPro action camera, and I have a lot of fun now, taking pictures, racing around Los Angeles, and not being quite so worried about About being run over by a bus! I am a retired disabled veteran and I would really love to add a few more lights to my system, but they are not cheap. The firefly lights are about $50 and the mini lights are about $37. I have one mini light that attaches to my rooster tail that streams behind me. I need at least two more of the mini lights and another full sized firefly for the front of my cycle. I have a family that wants to ride with me and they are all getting their own helmets and lights come birthday/Christmas time. My favorite part is that an entire group of people can synchronize the helmets and lights to flash together! It is really striking and people notice us! It will be much fun lighting up the day and the night with our Lumos lights and helmets. I’ve noticed this is catching on quickly with other riders and I’m happy to see fellow bicyclists with more visibility to drivers in vehicles - especially the busses who do not drive defensively in Los Angeles. They drive like they expect everybody else to get out of their way and people do. Write me back if you like and I will send you some video of my system as it grows along with my family. Until then, if you something that looks like an oversized skateboard with someone on top, laying back and keeping up with traffic, just give me a wave. Feel free to say, “There goes George! Lumos racer!” Lol. Thanks for asking me to write this review. I had as much fun writing it as I do setting up all your cool products. Keep up the good work.
I've had this helmet for about a month. So far it's held up very well. I've also purchased the winter liner. It fits perfectly in the helmet. I think having the extra set of lights in the helmet that I use in addition to lights attached to my bike make a noticable difference as I bike to work each day in the dark days of winter in the Pacific NW.
Really pleased with this helmet. Have had lots of comments on how great it is and where did I get it.
This helmet is very comfortable and makes a for a safe commute.
This helmet is a replacement for one I got my daughter last year. She adores it, and I am happy knowing she's safer. Something went wrong with the lights and the Lumos people replaced it quickly and easily. They even sent it twice when the delivery failed the first time. We love Lumos!
